How to Choose a Barbour Scarf: Wool, Cashmere or Gift Set

Want just one Barbour scarf, with no fuss? Start with the tartan lambswool at $65. It's 100% lambswool and about 77 x 10 inches, going by Barbour's own listing. A wool and cashmere blend ($65 to $95) feels different, and a scarf and glove or beanie set makes the easier present.

The tartan lambswool scarf: the straightforward choice

Ask most people to picture a Barbour scarf and they'll see tartan. (Americans often call it plaid.) We stock it in three colorways at $65 each: the classic tartan lambswool scarf, the modern one and the ancient one. All three share the same cut and fiber. Only the tartan changes.

Each is all-over tartan with a tasseled hem. Barbour lists the fabric as 100% lambswool, about 77 x 10 in (195 x 25 cm). That's a long, slim scarf. You can wrap it round the neck or let it hang under a coat.

Dry clean only is the catch here. Save it for cold days rather than every rainy commute.

Wool and cashmere blends: three scarves, three prices

None of our Barbour scarves is pure cashmere, but three are wool blended with cashmere. At $65, The Galingale tartan scarf is a wool and cashmere mix with an oversized tartan and tasseled hem. Next comes The Cabernet tartan scarf at $75: lambswool with a hint of cashmere, in a new-season colorway of the Barbour tartan. Then there's The Carrbridge tartan scarf at $95, the only one where the mix is spelled out: 90% lambswool and 10% cashmere, about 77 x 12 in (195 x 30 cm), says Barbour. That's the widest of the wool scarves. Like the plain lambswool, it's dry clean only. Searching for a Barbour cashmere scarf? This is the nearest match.

Sizes at a glance

A scarf's width affects how it sits on you, so here are the figures Barbour gives for the ones we carry:

  • Tartan lambswool scarf: about 77 x 10 in, 100% lambswool.
  • Carrbridge tartan scarf: about 77 x 12 in, 90% lambswool and 10% cashmere.
  • Scarf in the scarf and glove set: about 66 x 10 in, 100% wool.
  • Scarf in the Saltburn beanie set: about 73 x 22 in, boucle polyester.

Shortest of the group is the scarf in the glove sets. Measurements for the Galingale, Cabernet or Erica scarves aren't to hand, so we won't guess.

A lighter option: the Erica striped scarf

Prefer something lighter than heavy tartan? At $49, The Erica striped scarf in Breeze Blue is worth a look. Barbour describes it as a lightweight blend with a pastel stripe and a raw finish, with a woven Barbour label on the reverse. A spring coat or a jacket collar suits it better than a January parka.

Priced at $49, it falls $1 short of free shipping, which applies to orders of $50 or more in the US. Below that, shipping is a flat $8.95.

Scarf sets for gifts

A set means no pairing things up yourself. Both of the scarf and glove sets are $100 and arrive in a gift box. Details match across The Grey Midnight scarf and glove set and the Classic Olive set. Each scarf is 100% wool tartan. Barbour gives its size as about 66 x 10 in and says to sponge clean it. Soft-knit gloves are one size, 70% acrylic and 30% wool, and hand wash only. Pick the Olive set if the person usually wears green and waxed cotton.

Quite different is The Saltburn beanie and scarf set in Grey Rose, at $90. Its beanie has a faux fur pom, while the tartan scarf is boucle, 100% polyester, and much wider at about 73 x 22 in. Barbour says to hand wash it at 30°C (86°F), so it's the only scarf here you can wash at home. Handy if you'd rather skip dry cleaning trips.

Which one for whom

For a plain, long tartan, take the lambswool at $65. For a wider wrap in a wool and cashmere mix, take the Carrbridge. For a lighter stripe, the Erica. For a present, choose a set. Browse the whole Barbour Scarves collection if you want to see everything side by side.

Orders come from stock already held in the US, never from the UK. If you're near Newburyport, our shop at 22 State Street is open 10 am to 6 pm every day. Gift-boxed sets can go straight into a gift bag. Order a few days ahead of when you need them.

Questions we get asked

Are these Barbour scarves for men or women?

They're sold as one-size scarves, not as men's or women's cuts, so choose on color, width and length. The tartans suit anyone, and the lighter Erica stripe is the softer-toned option.

Is there a pure cashmere Barbour scarf?

Not in our current range. The Carrbridge is 90% lambswool and 10% cashmere, and the Galingale and Cabernet are also wool and cashmere blends.

Can I machine wash a Barbour scarf?

Not the wool ones. The tartan lambswool and Carrbridge scarves are dry clean only. The Saltburn boucle scarf can be hand washed at 30°C (86°F).

Which is the widest Barbour scarf you have?

The Saltburn scarf is widest at about 22 in, but it's boucle polyester. The widest wool scarf is the Carrbridge at about 12 in.

How much does a Barbour scarf cost?

On their own, our scarves run from $49 for the Erica striped to $95 for the Carrbridge. The tartan lambswool is $65. Gift sets are $90 to $100.

Do the gift sets come in a box?

Yes. The scarf and glove sets and the Saltburn beanie and scarf set all come in a Barbour gift box.

Do you have a Barbour scarf and hat set?

Yes, the Saltburn beanie and tartan scarf set in Grey Rose at $90. The beanie has a faux fur pom.

Does my order ship from the UK?

No. We ship from stock held in Massachusetts and only within the USA. Shipping is free on orders of $50 or more and a flat $8.95 below that.
